Post a CRM administration job in 2019 and the title was, almost without exception, "CRM Administrator" or "Salesforce Administrator." Post the same job today and you'll see it under a dozen different titles, most of them containing some arrangement of "Revenue," "Operations," "Systems," and "GTM." The work underneath — keep the pipeline data honest, keep the automations from fighting each other, make sure the forecast means something — hasn't changed nearly as much as the title generator suggests.
Where the fragmentation comes from
Some of it is genuine specialization: a company with three CRM instances, a CDP, and a marketing automation platform needs someone whose job is meaningfully broader than a single-tool admin role, and "RevOps" captures that better than "Administrator" does. But a lot of the title churn looks more like companies reaching for a title that sounds senior enough to justify the salary band they'd already decided on, or trying to differentiate a fairly standard role in a crowded job posting market.
The practical effect on the person doing the job search: you can't reliably filter by title anymore. A "RevOps Analyst" posting at one company is a junior reporting role; at another it's the only person holding together four systems and two acquisitions' worth of merged data. The title tells you almost nothing about scope, seniority, or what you'd actually be doing on a Tuesday.
What actually distinguishes the roles
- Number of systems you're accountable for. One CRM instance is a very different job than a CRM plus a CDP plus a marketing platform plus a data warehouse.
- Whether you build or you maintain. Greenfield build-out roles and "keep the decade-old instance running" roles get the same titles constantly, despite being almost entirely different skill sets.
- Who you report to. A RevOps role reporting into finance behaves very differently from one reporting into sales leadership, regardless of what the title says.
Until the industry converges on some shared vocabulary — which doesn't look imminent — the only reliable filter is reading the actual responsibilities section, not the title at the top of the posting.
